Please Help: Woodworking Gift
QuoteReply

Hey,

I realize that this might not be the typical subject for this forum, but I thought I'd give it a shot. My girlfriend is incredibly passionate about woodworking and has a number of projects on the table. As such, I was hoping to get her a present that any woodworker and/or wood carver would love. The problem is, I know nothing about the subject and would rather not explicitly ask her as I'd like for it to be a surprise. I'd prefer something more custom made, but obviously any suggestions woudl be phenomenal. She tends to focus on the creation of tables/chests and other components for around the house.

Thanks for your time.

John

Depending on how intricate your girlfriend gets into the creation of her projects, you could get her a few things depending on how much space you have and also your budget. If she does a lot of custom projects and a lot of hand carving, a nice set of chisels can last a long time and prove invaluable. Also, some good finishing equipment (like sanders) might be a nice thing to consider.

If she's interested in doing a lot more upfront work, like cutting large boards to size or creating bevels, you might want to consider a nice table saw or router. If there's a woodshop/store in your area, give them a visit and they should be able to help you out. Describe the kinds of projects she does and they'll be able to to point you in the right direction. If you can, bring pictures of her work. Also, avoid cheap equipment, it only makes jobs harder that it's supposed to make easier.

Good luck!

It sounds like you are wondering what piece of custom made furniture to buy her.  I say unless she saw something and dropped the hint that she wants it, avoid spending big bucks on something custom that she may or may not like. Also something that you may think is well-built she may see otherwise.  I have recieved countless well-intentioned pieces as gifts that I think were poorly constructed or made of poor quality materials.  As far as tools go I would ratehr buy my own tools as I need them. Again I have numerous well-intentioned gifts of tools that I have never used, are of poor quality, or I have ne application for.  If you really want to score points buy good jewelry and flowers. That works every time.
